Scripture Reading:
Exodus 13:17-17:16
Judges 4:4-5:31
John 14:1-31
Many people claim a belief in God. In fact, surveys taken over the years bear this out that somewhere between 70%-80% of Americans profess a belief in God.
But this is not the same as having an active faith in God and that is where things change dramatically.
It is one thing to believe that there is a God out there somewhere who may or may not have an interest in what we do with our lives but taking the Lord at His word and believing that He is who He says He is and acting on that faith is another matter entirely.
So the Lord saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. Thus Israel saw the great work which the Lord had done in Egypt; so the people feared the Lord, and believed the Lord and His servant Moses.
Exodus 14:30-31
When the children of Israel saw what God had done to Egypt they “feared the Lord”, they saw that God punished the wicked and rewarded the righteous. They also believed the Lord, that He could and would save them.
Jesus asks the same of us, that we believe in Him also. He reassures us in John 14:1, “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.”
When life seems overwhelming like an army of Egyptians bearing down on us or a sea that could drown us, do we trust that Jesus will save us? Even if He does not save us in the way that we desire, do we still trust Him?
Will we still reject the old life that may seem to bring comfort but really it brings despair? Will we trust Him and obey Him because we know that He loves us and will never leave or forsake us?
