The Spirit of Fear and Bondage to Death

General Posts, This Week in Scripture

Fear is tightening its grip on the perishing once again. Not that it was ever loosened all that much over the summer.

While many are reacting to mask mandates being reinstated and talk of vaccine passports and mandates intensify, we might fail to understand what is going on in the world today.

The bible calls it the spirit of fear brought by the bondage of death to those without salvation through Jesus Christ.

Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

Hebrews 2:14-15

Those without Jesus are in bondage, not only to death but the false god of this world who brings blindness to the truth.

Fear is being whipped up into frenzied panic by the media and government leaders. Fear of death is natural even among Christians, but it becomes toxic, even paralyzing among those without hope.

Christians should take part in the civil discourse and oppose the loss of liberty by totalitarianism. We should attend town hall and school board meetings, and we should vote in elections big and small.

More importantly, we should share the gospel of peace because perfect love casts out fear. The truth is that we cannot reason with those people who have no hope.

We can quote data and statistics all day long, but unsaved people’s minds are deceived, and their eyes are blind. We are casting pearls before swine, as Jesus would put it.

Now more than ever, Christians are called to pray and fast for our nation and our world. Only the truth of the gospel will change the thinking of people.

As I often say, politics and political leaders can not save us from the virus or its fear.

The only solution is the Lord.
